Loudoun United’s slow start haunts in 3-0 to Pittsburgh - Black And Red United

Loudoun United’s slow start haunts in 3-0 to Pittsburgh - Black And Red United

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC have built a fortress at home, suffering two 1-0 losses at Highmark Stadium over the last two years, even as the last one occurred in a July stoppage time loss. So Loudoun had the cards stacked against them, and a slow start cost them in the midst of a 3-0 loss at Highmark Stadium.

Loudoun brought 17-year-old Issa Mudashiru to Pittsburgh and gave him his first minutes at start as a professional. Even with the new start, Shane Wiedt fouled Mark Forrest in a clearance attempt in the Loudoun area, which Joshua Encarnacion ruled as a penalty. Forrest’s attempt beat Simon Lefebvre just over his right side for the 1-0 lead after five minutes. Moments later, Anthony Velarde’s volley in the area went off Elvis Amoh’s left arm, and his shot along the ground on Lefebvre’s right easily beat him (guessing to the left) for a 2-0 lead after eight minutes. While Jacob Greene was fouled by Jordan Dover in Pittsburgh’s box in the 16th minute, Joshua Fawole’s attempt to the left was saved by Daniel Vitiello to keep Loudoun off the scoresheet.

Loudoun held the deficit at two even as their rotations of players continued; Alioune Ndour, Christian Sorto and Adam Lundegard came on for Fawole, Amoh and Timmy Mehl (respectively), and held their own even as Wiedt went out to injury (replaced by Nelson Martinez. However, Albert Dikwa, a second-half substitute for Pittsburgh, managed to find a ball deflected off Lundegard, and fended Jeremy Garay off for a right footed ball to the left of Lefebvre for a goal and the eventual 3-0 win.

Loudoun (1-6-2) have their next game Saturday at 7pm against Hartford Athletic FC.
